Rabbit Catchers

Women catching rabbits with a ferret
1310-20
It has been my intention to get a decent photo of my rabbit catcher outfit for a couple years, but I always seem to be having too much fun at events to remember to ask someone when I look great, and then there's the one where I look like the caught rabbit...

This is the best of the bunch.  I'm only sorry the 3 week old kid wasn't swaddled properly, but this was taken in the parking lot on our way out (wimple untucked).  My son's first event!  It was really cold!
I belted the outer gown up, it was and is just too long.  It's on the To Do list before Pennsic. I think there is a fine line between matching the artwork and being practical.  We just aren't used to walking around in skirts that long, and not falling on your face or tripping on a train is good.  Also at events wet grass is a thing.

The pink gown is linen, and the poor thing has been altered to within an inch of its life.  It is hand finished.  Currently it laces down the front and has a V-neck both front and back.  It needs repair.  I have since shortened the sleeves.

The green is a beautiful fulled not-wool (it wrecked my iron and for the price I paid for it, that lie did not make me happy).  What it is is warm.  Between the two I can nurse without any problems.  Sideless surcotes are awesome for that.  I cannot recommend the front-slit and sideless surcoat combination enough for nursing.

The veils are all linen or linen/cotton.  I own a lot of them as I can never find one when I need it, so I'm always making new.  Hard to tell what I was wearing here, though I know it wasn't the silk.  The two wimple & top veil are pinned to a fillet which was braided into my hair.  If you hair isn't long enough, I recommend making a fake hair headband & going from there.  Pinning into the braid/fillet is critical for keeping everything in place. And be sure to tuck the wimple in.  Out is messy & gets in the way.  In matches the historic examples much better, keeps your neck warm and doesn't catch crumbs.
